Grunge music hit the mainstream in the early 1990s with bands such as Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana being signed to major record labels. Grunge fashion began to break into mainstream fashion in mid-1992 for both sexes and peaked in late 1993 and early 1994.
- Mother Love Bone, ‘Apple’ (1990) Mother Love Bone frontman Andy Wood dreamed of being a world-famous rock star, but he died of a heroin overdose before his band’s debut album Apple even came out.
- Toadies, ‘Rubberneck’ (1994) Grunge was already in full swing and mutating into mainstream alt-rock when the Toadies released their debut album Rubberneck on Interscope in 1994, a year that saw slick, accessible LPs from bands like Live, Bush and the Offspring flood the market.
- Fecal Matter, ‘Illiteracy Will Prevail’ (1986) Five years before Nevermind, Kurt Cobain was a high-school dropout recording 4-track demos in his aunt’s house.
- The U-Men, ‘Step on a Bug’ (1988) The U-Men emerged out of the same Seattle underground that birthed grunge, but the quartet were more Pere Ubu and Captain Beefheart than Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
- Nirvana – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Before “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” grunge was nothing but a handful of bands in the Pacific Northwest who played rock music.
- Pearl Jam – “Alive” Pearl Jam is impressive not just because of the meteoric success they achieved but because of the odds they beat. While the band had its own problems handling success, it was probably the only megaband to emerge unscathed from the rubble of grunge while their peers had succumbed to varying degrees of dissension and destruction.
- Alice in Chains – “Would?” Nirvana was recognized in the grunge era for bringing punk rock to the mainstream, and you could say Alice in Chains did the same for thoughtful, hairspray-free metal.
- Soundgarden – “Superunknown” For a brief moment in early 1994, grunge hit its absolute apex. Part of that was thanks to Soundgarden’s release of Superunknown, which went straight to number one.
