The name Wei first became associated with Cao Cao when he was named the Duke of Wei by the Eastern Han government in 213, and became the name of the state when Cao Pi proclaimed himself emperor in 220.
The initial steps towards its founding were taking by Cao Cao when he was pronounced duke of Wei in AD 213. When he died in 220, his son used this duchy name for the state he proclaimed in the same year.
Cao Cao, whose zone of control was the precursor to the state of Cao Wei, had raised an army in 189. In several strategic movements and battles, he controlled Yan Province and defeated several factions of the Yellow Turban rebels.
