Designed by architect Howard Dwight Smith, it was the nation's first concrete double-deck stadium and the largest concrete structure in the world. Smith opted for a unique horseshoe shape so the curve ensured the crowd always faced the field. Hence, the stadium's popular nicknames, "The Horseshoe" and "The Shoe."
