    Elise Mertens was born on November 17, 1995, and is 28 years old. Her mother, Liliane Barbe, teaches languages and history, while her father, Guido Mertens, makes furniture for churches.

    Mertens began playing tennis when she was 4 years old. She was introduced to the sport by her older sister Lauren, who is an airline pilot.
