  2. Feb 23, 2024 · Despite its small size and just over 100,000 inhabitants, it has a lot to offer to any kind of visitor. From historic sites, museums, and botanical gardens to a big variety of activities – you’ll find plenty of inspiration for things to see and do in Funchal.

    • Drink a poncha… or three. What better way to start this huge list than with a drink? A potent one, naturally. Poncha is Madeira’s national drink and it is bloody LETHAL.
    • Ride up the cable car to Monte and wave at EVERYONE who goes past… …Bonus points if it’s someone who looks like they really don’t want to wave back but they do anyway because that’s the law of the cable car.
    • Find the prettiest (pink!) square in Funchal. You wouldn’t believe how many photos I’ve taken of this square over the last decade. It has to be my favourite photo spot on the whole island.
    • Eat delicious local food at all the incredible restaurants and cafés. Madeira, and Funchal specifically, is a paradise for foodies. I’m not going to go into detail on specific restaurants and cafés to visit here, nor into what traditional Madeiran dishes you have to try.

    • Take an adventurous wicker toboggan ride. As I said in the previous section, one way of getting back after you have taken the Funchal cable car and reached the Monte village is by taking a ride on the famous Funchal wicker toboggans, better known as ‘Monte sleds’.
    • Take a walking tour of Funchal City. There’s no better way to explore Funchal than taking a walking tour through its cobbled streets, traditional houses, and Funchal Bay, while you learn about the history of the Island’s capital city and Madeira itself.
    • Learn about Cristiano Ronaldo’s life at his museum.
