Midway up the hillside backdrop, Monte is a small village that sits around 550 metres above sea level. The Funchal-Monte Cable Car runs from the historic centre of Funchal up to the village of Monte.
- Join a guided walking tour. I’m a huge fan of joining a guided walking tour soon after arriving in a city. Not only does this give you the lay of the land and expert local tips, but it is also one of the best ways to meet other travellers, especially as a solo traveller.
- Stop at Praço do Municipio. Paved with a mosaic of black and white stones – limestone from the mainland and Madeiran basalt – Praço do Municipio is Funchal’s elegant main square.
- Take in the view from the tower of the Jesuit Collegiate Church (Igreja de São João Evangelistica do Colégio) Climb the 84 steps to the tower of the Collegiate Church for beautiful views over Praço do Municipio and beyond.
