    The Command Prompt in Windows provides access to over 280 commands. These commands are used to do certain operating system tasks from a command-line interpreter instead of the graphical Windows interface we use most of the time.

    Below is a complete list of Command Prompt commands, often called CMD commands (and sometimes incorrectly as Command Prompt codes), available from the Command Prompt in Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

    Since these commands work within the context of Command Prompt, you have to open Command Prompt to utilize them.

    As mentioned above, we've also included DOS commands from MS-DOS and early ​versions of Windows:

    Command Description

    Append The append command can be used by programs to open files in another directory as if they were located in the current directory. The append command is available in MS-DOS as well as in all 32-bit versions of Windows. The append command is not available in 64-bit versions of Windows.

    Arp The arp command is used to display or change entries in the ARP cache. The arp command is available in all versions of Windows.

    • Run autostarts immediately. Problem: Windows 8.1, 10, and 11 wait 10 seconds or more before starting to run startup programs; Windows 7 loads them immediately.
    • End hanging programs. Problem: Sometimes programs hang. They still use up RAM, but are no longer usable. Solve the problem: One command ends any problem applications in one go
    • Shut down performance-hungry browsers. Problem: Browsers are almost all-rounders, which is reflected in their RAM consumption. Multiple instances of Firefox & Co.
    • Restart explorer.exe. Problem: Windows runs unstable and unreliable – this is purely subjective and can hardly be measured. The file manager (Explorer) loads slowly; under Windows 8.1, the charms bar does not appear when you swivel the mouse pointer on the right edge of the screen .
