Sep 28, 2022 · In 2 Kings 2, Elijah and Elisha traversed the Jordan River on dry land, and Elisha, understanding that Elijah would soon pass away, asked to be blessed with a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. Elijah was then carried straight into heaven by a chariot of fire.
Elijah therefore followed this earthly pattern in a reverse imagery (if you will), so that when he crossed the Jordan he entered the rest of the heavenly Promised Land. By asking Elijah to remain in each locale, Elijah was essentially testing Elisha, since Elisha was his protégé.

Jun 30, 2019 · When Elijah and Elisha arrive at the Jordan river in 2 Kings 2:8, Elisha takes his mantle, rolls it up, and strikes the water, which parts for them. Elijah had used that same mantle to cover his face before coming out to encounter God (1 Kings 19:13), and threw the mantle over Elisha at his recruitment (1 Kings 19:19).
