Throughout Joel and Ellie's adventures in The Last of Us, the pair encounter a large cast of characters. Each leading role brings something different to Ellie and Joel's story, whether that's a rivaling ideology or a new storyline that fleshes out the game's haunting world.

The lead protagonist of The Last of Us, Joel is a driven survivor that's willing to go to any lengths to protect the ones he loves. At the beginning of the game, we find Joel working as a smuggler in Boston's Quarantine Zone alongside another survivor named Tess.
Broken following the death of his daughter, Sarah, during the early days of the cordyceps outbreak, Joel is initially a morally-devoid killer that admits to murdering, extorting and torturing others to survive. During the Tommy's Dam chapter, we even learn that his brother, Tommy, left Joel to join the fireflies due to his increasingly sadistic survival methods.
During the course of the game, Joel meets Ellie, giving him a reason to fight and survive. It's evident he sees a chance to regain the daughter he lost and soon forms an unbreakable bond with Ellie. As the two adventure across the US, Joel struggles with his past trauma, eventually culminating in a brutal showdown in the Fireflies' lab where he sacrifices everything to prevent history from repeating itself.
Although it's never explicitly stated, it's suggested that Joel used to belong to one of the various hunter factions lurking throughout The Last of Us' world. During the Pittsburgh chapter, Ellie asks Joel how he knew the hunter he hit with his car wasn't actually wounded. Joel tells Ellie that he's been part of similar traps in the past.
The Last of Us' other main protagonist, Ellie is a curious teenage survivor that, prior to the events of the main campaign, has seen little of the world outside of Boston. Raised within the walls of a strict military school following the death of her mother when she was just a child, Ellie's life is forever changed when she and her best friend Riley are infected with the cordyceps virus.
While Riley quickly succumbs to the virus, Ellie learns she's immune, beginning a long and arduous journey to the Fireflies' base to have her immunity studied. The leader of the fireflies and a personal friend of Ellie's mother, Marlene, tasks Joel and Tess with escorting Ellie to this base.
However, things go awry when Tess is bitten and the Fireflies that were supposed to take Ellie are found dead. Joel promises Tess he'll take Ellie the rest of the way, beginning the unlikely pair's adventure. Losing her mother, her best friend and countless others throughout her tragic journey, Ellie quickly finds solace in Joel, noting during the Tommy's Dam chapter that he's one of the only people in her life that hasn't abandoned her.
Ellie's eventual arrival at the Firefly lab brings with it many revelations about her condition and what it means for mankind. However, Ellie and Joel's bond inadvertently prevents her gift from being used to its full potential.
We eventually discover new facts about Ellie during The Last of Us' prequel expansion: Left Behind. For one, we find out that Ellie and Riley's connection was romantic, as well as discover new details about Ellie's life in military school and her relationship with Marlene.
At the end of The Last of Us' campaign, Ellie travels to Jackson with Joel, although she has no idea about the events that transpired during the Firefly Lab chapter. She returns as one of the two lead protagonists of The Last of Us: Part II.
A fellow smuggler working alongside Joel, Tess is cold, calculated and street smart. Her tale begins during the Quarantine Zone chapter of the game, with Tess asking Joel to help her take down a local thug named Robert that ordered a hit on her.
Tess' desire for revenge eventually lands her and Joel in an even bigger conflict, as her run-in with Robert forces her to make a deal with the head of the Fireflies, Marlene. Marlene promises Tess guns in exchange for delivering Ellie out of Boston.
Met during the aptly named Bill's Town segment, Bill is a paranoid survivor that barricades himself away in a town rigged with traps, tripwires and fortified safehouses. Joel and Ellie team up with Bill to get access to a car, cueing a lengthy mission where the trio infiltrate an abandoned high school in search of a spare engine.
Bill and Joel clearly have a long, storied history, with notes found throughout Bill's Town revealing they used to work together. At the conclusion of the Bill's Town chapter, Joel finds the body of Bill's partner, Frank, who hung himself after being bitten on a job. Although it's never outwardly stated, it's all but confirmed that Frank was Bill's romantic partner.
The leader of the Fireflies and entrusted carer of Ellie, Marlene meets Joel during the Quarantine Zone chapter, asking him to take Ellie to meet the Fireflies in the Capitol Building. Following their meeting, we don't see Marlene again until the very end of the game when she returns in The Firefly Lab chapter.
Although the details of their relationship are scarce, Marlene used to know Ellie's mother, promising her that she'd take care of Ellie in her stead. As we discover during the Left Behind DLC, Marlene figured the best thing she could do for Ellie was send her to military school to keep her safe.
Joel's brother and a key member of a survivor settlement in Jackson, Tommy briefly appears during The Last of Us' Prologue, witnessing Sarah's death on Outbreak Day. He then returns during the Tommy's Dam chapter, as Joel tracks down Tommy to ask him for help finding the Fireflies.
Although he doesn't reveal it to Ellie, Joel also asks Tommy to take Ellie to the Fireflies in his place, wanting to lift the burden of his arduous escort mission. Tommy reluctantly agrees after some convincing, although Joel eventually changes his mind after a tense exchange with Ellie.
Tommy has a complex relationship with Joel, spending years with him surviving after the outbreak. When speaking about their time together in the Tommy's Dam chapter, Tommy tells Joel he has nightmares about the atrocities they committed. We also learn he left to join the Fireflies after Joel's sadistic methods of survival became too much.
He served a long tenure with the Fireflies before leaving and joining a community in Jackson. There he met and married his wife Maria, who Joel and Ellie also meet during the Tommy's Dam chapter.
Two brothers found holed up in an office block during the Pittsburgh chapter, Henry and Sam become important allies for Ellie and Joel during the second act of the story. Joining the team after they accidentally stumble across them when escaping the hunters' turret, Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam rely on each other to flee Pittsburgh and navigate the suburbs.
We learn from Henry that he's been caring for Sam since he was young and will do anything to protect him, no matter what. We see this firsthand during the final moments of the Pittsburgh chapter, when Henry abandons Joel to save Sam after the hunter turret tracks them down.
