  1. This is a list of the state parks in the U.S. State of Colorado. Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages the state park system to accommodate both outdoor recreation and tourism. There are currently forty-two parks open to the public, and there are others in development. [1]

    • Rocky Mountain National Park. Drive Time from Boulder: 1 hour. It’s a lovely drive up through the town of Lyons, where you can stop at Moxie Mercantile for a croissant and coffee, then continue up Hwy.
    • Eldorado Canyon State Park. Drive Time from Boulder: 20 minutes. That’s it: 20 minutes! You’ll go through the teensy town of Eldorado Springs. Alternatively, a free Eldo shuttle is available on summer weekends, so you can park in Boulder and skip the drive.
    • Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Drive Time from Boulder: 45 minutes. If you choose the southerly route (Hwy. 93), you can make a stop in Golden, with a cute downtown that retains its Western heritage.
    • Brainard Lake. Drive Time from Boulder: 55 minutes. The drive will take you up through Nederland (see below for some highlights of Nederland) and then north on the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, which is awe-inspiring any time of year, but especially in fall when swaths of aspen light the hillsides in gold.
  3. Campground Camping. Boulder Ranger District offers seven developed campgrounds. All are accessed from the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (Colorado Highways 7, 72, and 119). Individual operating seasons vary, however season dates range from mid-May through late October.

  5. Nearby State Parks and More. Golden Gate Canyon State Park (about an hour south of Boulder) is a beautiful, high-alpine area with spectacular mountain views and thick forests. Camping is available at the park's Reverend's Ridge or Aspen Meadows campgrounds by reservation.
