Apr 26, 2024 · Bytom is one of the main cities of the Silesian Metropolis – one of the biggest urban areas in the whole European Union. It used to be a heavily industrialized region but not many people know that Bytom is actually one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to 11th century. Even now the urban layout of Bytom resembles the Medieval times.
It was in mid-15th century that Bytom became a border city between Poland and Czechia. Those days, Bytom was not only visited by outstanding people, including king Casimir IV Jagiellon, the most famous chronicler Jan Długosz or the last Master of the Teutonic Order, Albrecht Hohenzollern.
Bytom is an industrial city in the Silesian Voivodeship of southern Poland. With a population of 161,139 in 2021, it's part of the Silesian Metropolis centred on Katowice 7 km southeast.
