Irving Grant Thalberg Jr. (August 25, 1930 – August 21, 1987) was an American author and the son of 1930s Hollywood producer Irving Thalberg and Academy Award -winning actress Norma Shearer. Thalberg was six years old when his father died from pneumonia at the age of 37.

Early years. Thalberg was born in Brooklyn, to German Jewish immigrant parents, William and Henrietta (Haymann). Shortly after birth, he was diagnosed with "blue baby syndrome", caused by a congenital disease that limited the oxygen supply to his heart.
1930 – 1987. Scholar and author. The son of actress, Norma Shearer, and producer, Irving Thalberg, he received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1960, and subsequently taught philosophy at Oberlin College from 1960 to 1963, and at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1965 until his death.
