Dee & Friends in Oz is an alternate Oz Netflix musical-CGI series aimed for a preschool audience with the first season plus 43 pilot movie released on Netflix on February 5th, 2024.
It was created by Angela C. Santomero and produced by 9 Story Media Group/Brown Bag Films. The series centers on a young Black protagonist, Dorothy “Dee” Davis — a girl writing a brand-new story of Oz where every kid has the power inside themselves to be a hero. Dee embarks on epic, cinematic adventures alongside her friends to take on obstacles in this magical, musical land.
As explained by the co-executive producer and head writer Halcyon Person: “ To meet the needs of this new generation, we’ve built on the century-long legacy of Oz by flipping the story of a little African-American girl named Dee dropped into a fantasy, just yearning to go back home. Instead, this is a story about a young Black girl named Dee unapologetically making a home for herself in this fantasy world, while learning about herself in the process.”
•Layla Capers as Dee Davis: A 7-year old girl from New Jersey. Her full name is Dorothy Denetris Dionne Davis, so she shares her name with Dorothy Gale. She likes to write stories and strives to be the hero of the story.
•Sevien Desuyo as Scarecrow, a young scarecrow who likes to sit upside down to think.
•Skylar, a human friend of Dee.
•Judah Edwards as Tin, a young tin boy who lives in Tinland and likes to invent things.
•Quentin, a human friend of Dee.
•Sid Kumat as Lion, a young lion cubs who likes to roar really loud.

•Nearly all the characters are completely original with these key details:
•As a nod to the 1939 film, most characters have a human counterpart voiced by the same actor.
•Miss Emerald is in charge of Oz instead of the Wizard that is now simply a title that can only be obtained by wearing the Crown of Oz.
•Miss Emerald and Miss Ruby as sisters both have purple skin.
•Inspired by Wicked Witches, Eastyn has pink skin while her twin sister Westyn has blue skin.
•Instead of being one of a kind, Scarecrows and Tin People have their own populations likely brought to life by magic.
