Louis the German (c. 806 /810 – 28 August 876), also known as Louis II of Germany, was the first king of East Francia, and ruled from 843 to 876 AD.
Louis II was the king of the East Franks, who ruled lands from which the German state later evolved. The third son of the Carolingian emperor Louis I the Pious, Louis the German was assigned Bavaria at the partition of the empire in 817.
