Hothead Pete Stone has been arrested for the murder of George. Clem Rogers, known as "the Hanging Judge" has come to Stone Junction, Kansas in 1889 to preside over the murder trial of Pete Stone, son of town ruler "Big Tom" Stone.
A former gunfighter, now a circuit court judge, faces his father's killer in a small post-Civil War Kansas town.
The Johnson brothers and the drifter try to waylay Rogers, but a deputy sheriff discovers them and kills them in a gun battle in which he himself is killed. Big Tom orders Rile to draw Rogers into a gunfight after the trial, but in a manner that will discredit the judge regardless of the outcome.
