The screenplay for this mystery is based upon a story suggested to Liberty Magazine by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is the tale of a prominent lawyer who shocks his snooty friends, family and colleagues by abruptly abandoning his successful practice and his wife to find true happiness.
The story: A corporate attorney becomes disillusioned with his industry and disappears the same week his wife is murdered. That was the basic pitch by the president was then crafted into a full story. The publicity from the president's involvement made it a natural success.
