Abaya had long been typed as a director of female, if not feminist, films, and the new project centered on the experiences and memories of a young male growing up in a fishing community in the 1950s. The mode of the story is also a departure, recalling the magic realism of Latin American novelists.
Her death in late 2012 at the age of 57 was widely mourned in her country and those parts of the world where her works had captured the imagination of filmgoers and signposted the burgeoning vitality of Asian cinema with a Philippine complexion.
