Carlo Gambino (Italian: [ˈkarlo ɡamˈbiːno]; August 24, 1902 – October 15, 1976) was a Sicilian-born American crime boss who was the leader and namesake of the Gambino crime family of New York City.
Carlo Gambino was the head of one of the Five Families of organized crime—the Bonanno, Colombo, Genovese, Lucchese, and Gambino crime families—in New York City from 1957 to 1976, with major interests in Brooklyn, and reputedly the “boss of bosses” of the U.S. national crime syndicate.

On October 15, 1976, Carlo Gambino died at home of natural causes. Against expectations, he had appointed Castellano to succeed him over his underboss Dellacroce. Gambino appeared to believe that his crime family would benefit from Castellano's focus on white collar businesses.
