Clara Blandick was born in 1880 and grew up in Boston. By 1900 she began pursuing acting as a career. Her first professional appearance came in 1901, when she was cast as Jehanneton in the play If I Were King, which ran for 56 performances at Garden Theatre (an early component of Madison Square Garden).
Clara Blandick was born on June 4, 1876, in British Hong Kong, where her father was a ship captain. She was delivered by another captain, William H. Blanchard, whose wife gave her the name Clara Blanchard Dickey. She later changed her name to Clara Blandick by combining the first syllables of her middle and last names. [according to Wikipedia]
She was a member of Sylvester Poli’s stock company in the teens, and appeared in a handful of silent movies 1911-1917, most of them for Kalem, starring Tom Moore. In 1929 Blandick moved out to Hollywood and began her substantial career as a character actress in the newly talking pictures.She was almost always cast in Aunt Em type roles.
April 15, 2021by Castro Burger. Clara Blandick is best known for her memorable minor role as Auntie Em in The Wizard of Oz. Blandick's health steadily declined throughout the 1950s. Her eyesight began to fail, and she was suffering greatly from severe, painful arthritis. At 69, Blandick had gone into seclusion at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
