In honor of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, IGN is taking a look back at some of the iconic characters who've fallen along the way, and the lasting impact they had on the story. These heroes and villains may not have made it to the end of the road, but their lives weren't in vain - they stand as a fitting reminder that when you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die.

Syrio Forel only appeared in three episodes of Game of Thrones: Season 1, but his pivotal role is still being talked about years later -- in fact, theories about the fate of his character are alive and well, even as the show enters its final season. Arya Stark's "dancing master" helped set the stage for what would become one of Game of Thrones' most iconic arcs, seeing Arya follow in the footsteps of her Braavosi mentor to become not just a master swordswoman, but someone who frequently says "not today" to the God of Death.

The vague nature of Syrio's "death" scene in Season 1 and general badass nature of the character led many to believe the First Sword of Braavos might not have really died at the hands of Meryn Trant after all, despite the showrunners definitively telling star Maisie Williams that he is dead. Theories aside, Miltos Yerolemou sat down with IGN to reminisce about Syrio's death and the legacy it left on Game of Thrones in Chapter 2 of our retrospective series, "When I Died on Game of Thrones."

Do you know why Syrio's death was kept off-screen, when that's not often the case with deaths on the show?

Yeah, well, what's interesting is George R. R. Martin did write episode 8, which is the episode with that scene in it. So he absolutely had every right and freedom to be more explicit, but as I said, I think there is a reason why he chose that as a narrative technique, which is if you see him die, it changes something in Arya and the story about Arya. And so for Arya, there isn't the trauma. There isn't the absolute clarity of knowing what happened. So it just gives it enough space for his words and him as a character just to live in her mind, and I think that's a nice narrative technique. I mean, it's clearer in the books, because in the books, you can sense that she's thinking about those mantras. But I think that's the reason... I did ask him and he just said, "Well, that's just the way I wanted it."

You're also one of the few characters on the show who's been actively avenged - was that satisfying?

It wasn't satisfying. I mean ... Of course, I'm always very proud of Maisie Williams and everything she does, 'cause obviously, it was the very first thing she did as an actress, like everything I see her in now, I feel proud about it, which is completely ridiculous. But I find loving who Arya Stark is, is hard, and I think that's what makes it so compelling to watch, because they don't make her revenge feel good. There's a couple, like the Walder Frey and his team, when she got rid of them - that's very satisfying. But even killing Meryn Trant the way that she did, they had to turn that character into a monster to justify her killing him in the way that she did. And of course, as Jaqen says, "That was not her life to take." I love that. I love the complicated journey you have with pretty much every character that is in that show, and I think with Arya it is, in the way that you saw that brilliant bit of acting from Maisie when she leaves the Hound to die. It's like she loses herself, the revenge kills her a bit. And in the last season, you see that she's got herself together. She's a completely different person now. I think it has changed her. I think she isn't that 13-year-old girl anymore.

How do you think the show will end?

It's got to be bittersweet. It's got to be something that we don't see coming, which probably means that Kit is right when he says that it's going to divide opinion. 'Cause you can't please everyone. Especially if you want to be bold. And the one thing we can guarantee is that there's going to be something bold happening. I use the word "bold" as in, you're not going to miss that. I don't know ultimately what it means to the world of Westeros, whether there'll be a throne, whether there'll even be a King's Landing where there'll be a throne room in it at all. What I do think, or at least, I'm kind of banking on, is that we see our favorite characters having to face each other... I think that's going to be really fascinating. I think the emotional stakes will be so much higher than it's ever been, because you're going to be pitting people that you actually like together.
