   5 days ago · In 1473 Elizabeth was made to grant Fowlmere to Richard, duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, who in 1477 gave it to Queens' College, Cambridge. (fn. 70) The college held Fowlmere manor in 1484, (fn. 71) but following Henry VII's accession (fn. 72) it was restored to John de Vere, earl of Oxford, who held it at his death in 1513.

   Oct 15, 2024 · In 1836 the almshouses, whose site had been sold to St. Catharine's, were rebuilt in Queens' Lane. One of the new houses was sold to King's and the rest were demolished in 1911. To replace them and the allowances which Queens' had made to the inmates, the College thereafter paid weekly pensions of 8 s. to eight women.

   Why was Queen's a good school?

   • Thus Queen's emerged from the Middle Ages as a comfortably endowed college with about ten Cumbrian fellows. The 16th century was, as elsewhere, the decisive period. As elsewhere, the new growth became more vigorous when the Elizabethans found themselves freed from their anxieties. In religion Queen's registered a normal graph of the Tudor changes.

   • These were begun in 1352 with the building of a gateway with adjoining chambers in Queen's Lane, facing the northern corner of St. Edmund Hall (fn. 50) and the adjoining churchyard; drawings of it by Bereblock, 1566, Loggan, 1675, and James Green, c. 1720, were reproduced by Mr. Aymer Vallance in The Old Colleges of Oxford, 1912.

   How many people read for honours at Queen's University?

   • The lowest figure has been 24 in 1916; higher numbers have been 240 in 1920, 220 in 1939, 335 in 1947, and 293 in 1950. The increase of the teaching staff also reflects the raised standards of the University. As late as 1889 only 17 men at Queen's read for Honours. They had to choose between the five ancient Faculties.
