Cupertino, California, is on the western edge of Silicon Valley against the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. With a population of 64,000 people within 13 square miles, Cupertino is 42 miles south of San Francisco and is home to high-tech companies, most notably Apple Inc.
Cupertino owes its earliest mention in recorded history to Spaniards with a pioneering spirit. In 1776, Captain Juan Bautista de Anza led an expedition from Sonora, Mexico, up the coast of California, aiming to establish a presidio (fort) on San Francisco Bay.
Cupertino (population 60,000 in 2020) is situated up against the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains. It is something of an anomaly being the one city in the South Bay that doesn't have a distinct town center or main street, though there are concentrations of upscale development in the works.
