I am looking to buy a combination microwave oven but am unsure of the space needed for ventilation. I will have a gap of about 20cm above only 9cm at the back and a metre either side. Does anyone here know if that will be enough for safety purposes.

Most models are similar in height, so this isn't something you'll need to worry about too much. You need to make sure you have enough clearance space between the top of the microwave and any cupboards, though (usually at least 10cm, although it can vary between models, so check before you buy).
Over the range models must be installed 66" from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet that the microwave/Advantium attaches to. This can also be measured as 30" from the cooktop to the bottom of the cabinet it attaches to. There is a minimum and maximum cabinet depth.
