   How did Great Marlborough Street become Oxford Street?

   • Originally the western extremity of Great Marlborough Street came to an end two houses beyond the modern No. 22 on the north side. In 1736 the Duke of Argyll extended the line of the street a short distance westward under the name of Argyll Street, which then turned north and led into Oxford Street.
