Mary Virginia Martin was born on Dec. 1, 1913, in Weatherford, Tex. She attended private schools and for a year the University of Texas. She began her professional career as co-owner of a dancing school in her hometown in the 1930s. Late in the decade she went to Hollywood, where her initial attempts as a singer and actress were unsuccessful.

A muse of Rodgers and Hammerstein, she originated many leading roles on stage over her career, including Nellie Forbush in South Pacific (1949), the title character in Peter Pan (1954), and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959).
