A Celebration for Jesus. John 12:1 tells us that Jesus arrived in the small village called Bethany. Bethany was about two miles (3.2 km) east of Jerusalem. This was the home-village of the two sisters, Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus (John 11:1-2). Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:38-46).
Jan 4, 2022 · John the Baptist also went to Perea during his ministry. Evidently, he baptized people in Perea, since Scripture indicates that he performed baptisms in the Jordan at Bethany, a Perean city (John 1:28; 3:26; 10:40). This Bethany is not to be confused with the city where Martha and Mary lived, near Jerusalem.
The First Clue to Why Jesus Waited. Our first clue is found in John 11:4. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick He said, “ This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.”. This passage shows that Jesus knew God’s plan. This illness would not leave Lazarus dead.
Jesus reached Bethany (only two miles from Jerusalem) six days before the Passover (John 12:1). Each morning He would journey to Jerusalem and then return in the evening to Bethany. He did this all week until His arrest. Let’s briefly review the events of this week.

Luke 24:51: Jesus leads the eleven remaining disciples to Bethany, a village on the Mount of Olives, and instructs them to remain in Jerusalem until the coming of the Holy Spirit: "And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy."
