The same exact goalie will have a different save % when playing with a young defense that struggles and constantly gives up 5 yard shots vs. playing with an experienced defense that only gives up low angle shots or shots from 13 yards out.
You roll an armor save when a wound is inflicted. A space marine has a 3+ save, meaning a roll of 3, 4, 5, or 6 will nullify the wound. Carry on with battle! If you fail the save, the model suffers the damage value. You save once per wound, not for each damage amount.
