Sleeping with the Past became John's best selling album of the 1980s. Sleeping with the Past is the twenty-second studio album by English musician Elton John, released on 29 August 1989. It is his best-selling album in Denmark and is dedicated to his longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin.
Both Elton and Bernie had faced tumultuous periods throughout the decade, and the songs of "Sleeping with the Past" reflect both their suffering and healing. Sonically, the record's sounds harken back to the R&B / soul sounds of the 1960s', recalling records by the Drifters, Marvin Gaye, and other well known names Elton had long admired.
This album marked somewhat of a comeback for Elton John and although it is a late 1980s affair, harking back to sounds of the 60s, it still sounds fresh and exciting now in the 21st century.
