Jan 1, 2020 · In his Autobiography, John Stuart Mill tells us that though his conviction regarding the equality of the sexes was a result of his earliest engagements with political subjects, it remained an abstract idea before his relationship with Harriet Taylor (later Taylor Mill) began.
John Taylor died of rectal cancer in 1849, and in the spring of 1851 Harriet was married again, this time to John Stuart Mill. She suffered from various health problems affecting her nervous and respiratory systems. In 1841, for instance, she lost much of the use of her legs for an extended period (J. S. Mill, [TEL], 486–7).

Harriet Taylor was the long-time companion and eventually the wife of John Stuart Mill. She had a great influence on his thinking about the situation of women in Victorian Britain and co-wrote some articles with him. She also wrote a number of works on her own such as The Enfranchisement of Women (1851).

Photographs. The house Harriet was born in is 8 Beckford Place. Currently it is the 8th house south of East street on Walworth Road. (Beckford Place is merely a section of Walworth Road.) Currently there is a women’s dress shop on the first floor, but the top three floor were accessible.
