From a storytelling perspective, I would argue that the three of them DID get a happy ending. Damon and Elena obviously by living their life together. Canon tells us they had a long and happy life. But I would argue that Stefan’s happy ending is bittersweet, and not completely unhappy like many fans believe.

I just have a really hard time believing that Damon was actually happy as a human and that him and Elena had some kind of perfect marriage. The scenes where Stefan is showing him what their relationship would probably be like seemed more realistic to me.
