    • ‘Please Like Me’ (2013-2016) (Hulu) Written by and starring comedian Josh Thomas, Please Like Me is not quite a typical Australian comedy. Partly inspired by events in Thomas’ life, the series is both funny and moving, successfully balancing serious themes — mental illness, sexual assault, and suicide — with Josh’s intelligent, ironic humor.
    • ‘The End’ (2020) (Showtime) Edie (brilliantly played by Harriet Walter) lost her husband six months ago and doesn’t see the point in living. After a failed suicide attempt, her daughter Kate (Frances O’Connor) relocates Edie to Australia so she can be more closely supervised.
    • ‘Wolf Like Me’ (2022) (Peacock) We’ve established that Australians love dark comedy — the darker, the better — and Wolf Like Me is no exception. Much of the show’s screen time is taken up by Mary (Isla Fisher) and Gary (Josh Gad), as they navigate their new romance.
    • The Lost Flowers of Alice Heart. Genre: Drama. About: A nine-year-old girl loses both her parents in a mysterious fire and is sent to live with her grandmother on a flower farm.
    • The Twelve. Genre: Drama. About: Twelve ordinary Australians, with struggles of their own, are selected for jury duty in a murder trial in which a woman stands accused of killing a child.
    • Wellmania. Genre: Comedy. About: When a health crisis forces a successful food writer to rethink her hard-partying ways, she jumps into a journey to get well — even if it kills her.
    • Deadloch. Genre: Comedy. About: The Tasmanian town of Deadloch is left reeling when a local man turns up dead on the eve of the crowd-pulling Winter Feastival.
