Boudin was born and brought up on the Normandy coast, retaining a lifelong affection for the area, which he painted throughout his career. But he was also drawn to Brittany, and made regular visits there in the 1850s, 1860s and 1870s.

In 1858, 18-year-old Monet met Eugène Boudin, who was then 34 years old. Boudin recognized Monet’s talent and encouraged him to begin painting landscapes. Monet was a good student and spent a lot of time painting with Boudin on the coast and in the countryside.
His initial period was chiefly influenced by seventeenth-century Dutch painting and the work of his contemporaries of the Barbizon School. Boudin went several times to Brittany after 1855. The region’s landscape and its customs, streets, churches and markets became a theme of his painting.
