Sir John Phillip William Dankworth, CBE (20 September 1927 – 6 February 2010), also known as Johnny Dankworth, was an English jazz composer, saxophonist, clarinettist and writer of film scores. [ 1 ][ 2 ][ 3 ][ 4 ][ 5 ] With his wife, jazz singer Dame Cleo Laine, he was a music educator and also her music director.

Perhaps best known as one of the world’s leading jazz exponents, composer for television and film, he also composed for and conducted many of the world’s top orchestras. Born on 20th September 1927, John showed early proficiency on the clarinet and by the age of 17 had entered London's Royal Academy of Music.
