Harris was born on 1 October 1930, at Overdale, 8 Landsdown Villas, Ennis Road, Limerick, and was the fifth in a family of eight children, (six boys and two girls), to flour merchant Ivan Harris and Mildred (née Harty).
Richard Harris was born on 1 October 1930, in Limerick, Irish Free State, to Ivan John Harris and Mildred Josephine Harris. He and his siblings, Patrick Ivan, Noel William Michael, Diarmid Dermot, and William George Harris, were brought up in a middle class household.
Born in the city of Limerick as one of eight children in his family, Harris was the son of a local flour–mill owner whose business later fell on hard times. In his youth, he was a talented rugby player, but at age 22 was struck down by tuberculosis.
Richard St John Harris was born on October 1, 1930 in Limerick, Ireland, to a farming family, one of nine children born to Mildred (Harty) and Ivan Harris. He attended Crescent College, a Jesuit school, and was an excellent rugby player, with a strong passion for literature.

- He could have played rugby for Ireland. A talented rugby player, Harris played alongside Keith Wood’s father Gordon at Crescent College in Limerick and represented Munster Schools and Munster Under-20s.
- He blagged his way to his first stage role. While recuperating from TB, he spent his time reading, developing a love of the arts. Originally having ambitions to be a director, he instead turning his attention to acting.
- He was a man of many talents. It wasn’t just at acting where Harris excelled. Multi-talented, he also released several albums, including The Richard Harris Love Album, as well as singles from his movies.
- He received threats from Loyalists… and Republicans. In the biography Behaving Badly, Cliff Goodwin says that in 1970, Harris was a target for Loyalist paramilitaries who believed he was sympathetic to the IRA.
