In fact, our thirtieth president was John Calvin, and his father persisted in calling his son John, however our president went by his middle name Calvin.

Jul 5, 2024 · On this day in 1924, President Calvin and First Lady Grace Coolidge tend to their son at Walter Reed Army hospital. Their teenaged son was deathly ill and not expected to survive. It was an unexpected and shocking tragedy that left the Coolidges devastated.
John Coolidge’s girlfriend Florence Trumbull, daughter of the governor of Connecticut, quipped when he graduated from Amherst that they were “not engaged—yet.” But they soon were, and married the following year. They would have two daughters together.
Calvin Coolidge was the only son of John Calvin and Victoria Moor Coolidge. His father was a storekeeper, and his mother cultivated in him a love of nature and books. In 1905 he married Grace Anna Goodhue, a teacher at the Clarke Institute for the Deaf, with whom he had two sons.
On July 7, 1924, the president’s son, Calvin Jr., died at Walter Reed Hospital of blood poisoning. Calvin Jr. sustained a small blister on his toe while playing tennis on the White House Grounds with his older brother.
