Jan 10, 2022 · The lyrics are based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun, by iconic writer Dalton Trumbo, a classic critique of the horrors of World War I. Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older brother, David Hale, who once had a stint in Metallica. One passage, in particular, inspired the song.
Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the song portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded—arms, legs and jaw blown off by a landmine, blind, deaf, and unable to speak or move—begging God to take his life.
