  1. The cinematic quality of TLK is very high IMO with lots of dramatic shots, but not off the charts CGI like GoT. Overall, TLK is a character driven story, with great characters, and is in a broad sense about the clash of Saxon vs Dane/Norse cultures and Christian vs Old Norse religions.

  2. [no spoilers] If you’ve seen both shows, which King Alfred do you prefer? (I recently just started watching Last Kingdom and already like Alfred’s character in that)

The fifth season of The Last Kingdom has been one of its best; with plenty of action and great character moments, it all leads to one final battle: the Battle of Bebbanburg. • Vikings. "Vikings" and "The Last Kingdom" could be companion series. The young men portrayed as the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok in "Vikings" appear or are mentioned in "The Last Kingdom."
    • The Witcher. Okay, so there's nothing historic in this fantasy tale set on the fictional land: "The Continent." And while "The Last Kingdom" is about the stabilization of England after the Viking invasion, "The Witcher" focuses on magic and hunting monsters.
    • Marco Polo. Around the same time that Alfred's ("The Last Kingdom") direct descendants were starting to realize his dream of a unified England, Marco Polo was connecting the rest of the world.
    • Rise of Empires: Ottoman. Most of these historical fiction series are about unifying one's kingdom. "Rise of Empires: Ottoman" is about conquering another and so starting an empire that continues in the same place to this day.
  3. Mar 9, 2022 · This review of The Last Kingdom Season 5 is spoiler-free. High-quality historical epics are few and far between, but ever since 2015, The Last Kingdom — an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s dense historical-fiction series The Saxon Stories — has been a reliable entry in the genre.

  4. Mar 11, 2022 · Out of all the period dramas on TV, The Last Kingdom is up there with the best. Action-packed, historically accurate (for the most part) and full of excellent political drama, this show is really like no other.

  6. Apr 11, 2022 · The Last Kingdom is definitely worth the watch. Even with a slow start, the story is incredibly engaging with interesting characters and terrific writing. A Historical Fiction that rivaled Vikings as it was airing, it’s comparable but uniquely different to it.
