Dundonald (Gaelic: Dùn Dhòmhnaill) [3] is a large settlement and civil parish in County Down, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. It lies east of Belfast and is often considered a suburb of the city.
Dundonald is a large village situated between Troon and Kilmarnock in South Ayrshire. The 14th century Dundonald Castle stands on a hill west of the village, and the visitor centre and museum boasts a café, shop and exhibition which tells the story of the castle.

Dundonald Castle is truly one of Scotland’s hidden gems, tucked away in the quiet, rural landscape in South Ayrshire. The 14th-century hilltop fortified ruin is looked after daily by The Friends of Dundonald Castle SCIO, who also manage the attraction’s Visitor Centre.
Dundonald Castle Visitor Centre is fully accessible and the castle is partially accessible but is located at the top of a steep hill. The interior of the castle can be accessed with a wheelchair although there are stairs to access the upper levels.

Sitting on a prominent hilltop in Dundonald village, Dundonald Castle commands fine views over the Firth of Clyde. The castle was built on the site of earlier castles belonging to the High Stewards of Scotland and can be regarded as the cradle of the Stewart Dynasty.
