Bauhaus Dessau, also Bauhaus-Building Dessau, is a building-complex in Dessau-Roßlau. It is considered the pinnacle of pre-war modern design in Europe and originated out of the dissolution of the Weimar School and the move by local politicians to reconcile the city's industrial character with its cultural past.
When the Bauhaus moved from Weimar to Dessau, a unique opportunity arose: to build a new school building that would express the ideas of the Bauhauslers in architectural form. Steel, concrete, and glass.
Located in Dessau’s town centre, it was built to plans by the Spanish firm of architects González Hinz Zabala and opened in September 2019. The centrepiece is the Black Box, designed to house the treasures of the new Bauhaus Museum.
Located in the centre of Dessau, the Bauhaus Museum creates both a boundary and a connection between urban space and nature, between shopping centres and a public park. Depending on the light situation, the surroundings are reflected to varying degrees in the building’s glass façade, which sometimes becomes transparent.
This property, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996, originally comprised buildings located in Weimar (Former Art School, the Applied Art School and the Haus Am Horn) and Dessau (Bauhaus Building, the group of seven Masters' Houses).
