Her family is Jewish; her mother was born in Russia, and her paternal grandparents were from Romania, and settled in Michigan. [3][4][5] Shaye studied acting at the University of Michigan before she moved to New York to appear in Off Broadway productions. In 1977, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career.
