James Gresham was a lawyer and an agent for Judge William Paston's estates in north Norfolk, including Gresham. He continued to serve the family for many years. The Gresham family, like the Pastons, worked their way up the social order and also founded a school (Gresham's School in Holt).
Moorwood Drive and Denesway follow the boundaries of James Gresham's old grounds; Moorwood Drive actually is the old drive leading to the rear of Gallery House and Gallery Cottages. Its stone gatepost and part of its stone cobbled surface remain.
In 1544 he married Anne Ferneley, widow of the London merchant Sir William Read, but maintained residence principally in the Low Countries, basing his headquarters at Antwerp [1] in present-day Belgium (then the Spanish Netherlands), where he became renowned for his adept market-play.
