This page explores the evolution of the Walt Disney Pictures production logo appearing at the beginning of films released by Walt Disney Pictures. The logo almost always features a fairytale castle directly inspired by Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Magic Kingdom's Cinderella...
Walt Disney Pictures. Until 1985, instead of a traditional production logo, the opening credits of Disney films used to feature a title card that read "Walt Disney Presents", and later, "Walt Disney Productions Presents". [6]
From 1982 to 1985, the studio's theatrical product under the Disney name (except for the two shorts released in 1983, Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore, and Mickey's Christmas Carol) had simply "Walt Disney Productions" at the end of the credits.
In 1995, though, the logo underwent a transformation into what would be the basis for the Disney logo we see today, featuring a light blue castle with the text “Walt Disney Pictures” displayed across it. This logo was used until 2006 when Disney adopted the logo we now see today.
Cinderella’s castle debuted in the Disney logo in 1985 and, just like the updated font, would stick around for the long term. It sat above the main “Walt Disney” wordmark and would be a chief part of the animated design as well, where an arch would create a half-circle behind it.
Walt Disney Pictures did not have a proper onscreen logo until 1985. 1st Logo (placeholder logo) (October 7, 1983) Visuals: Just the text "WALT DISNEY PICTURES" (set in the typeface Celtic, later known as University Roman) in a teal rectangular box with white and blue outlines around it. Technique: A still printed cel. Audio: None.
In 1937, the phrase “Walt Disney Pictures” began to be used as a logo. It’s still relevant, although the designers have made small changes to it. In 1985, the castle was featured on the emblem, an integral part of the brand’s visual identity.
