The island of Saint Barthelemy was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus on his second trip. It was only in the mid-seventeenth century (1648) that the island was permanently occupied by the French.
Discovered by Columbus in 1493 and named for his brother Bartolomeo, it was settled around 1648 by French colonists who were living on the nearby island of St. Kitts. This early settlement did not prosper and in 1651 the island was sold to the Knights of Malta.
