Production began in Wilmington, North Carolina, in February 2012 and scenes were shot in chronological order. The Conjuring was released in the United States and Canada on July 19, 2013, by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.

Feb 21, 2021 · ‘The Conjuring’ was filmed in North Carolina, specifically in Wilmington and Currie. Since the film’s story is set in 1971, director James Wan wanted to recreate the feel of a 1970s horror film.
- The Nun. Setting: 1952. While there are scenes in other Conjuring Universe titles that take place before it, Corin Hardy’s The Nun is featured first on the timeline because the primary events in the story take place before all of the other narratives in the franchise – specifically taking us back to the year 1952.
- Annabelle Creation. Setting: 1955. As the name of the film implies, David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle Creation is designed as an origin story for its titular character, literally showing how the seriously creepy porcelain toy came into existence.
- The Nun II. Setting: 1956. Set a year after Annabelle Creation but featuring absolutely zero connections to it (in part because it is set an ocean away), The Nun II is a direct follow-up to The Nun and follows the further adventures of Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Maurice “Frenchie” Theriault (Jonas Bloquet).
- Annabelle. Setting: 1967. Despite Annabelle’s very small role in The Conjuring, audiences quickly fell in love with her, and Warner Bros. acted quickly to take advantage of that affection.
- The Nun. 1952. The Nun takes place in Romania in 1952 and at this point is the earliest chapter in The Conjuring universe. Wan and the film’s director, Corin Hardy, seem to have designed the film to be an “origin of evil” type of story, which explores the genesis of The Conjuring’s big baddie and ultimate evil Valak.
- Annabelle: Creation. 1955. Even though Annabelle: Creation came out after both Annabelle and The Conjuring, it’s a prequel to both. In fact, it’s kind of remarkable that Annabelle: Creation is not only a fantastic horror film, but that it also connects so many dots throughout the franchise.
- The Nun II. 1956. Jumping ahead only a few years after the events of The Nun, The Nun II plays a surprising role in essentially tying together the entire timeline of the Conjuring universe.

The scene was filmed during spring break in March 2012, with production team members scouting different areas in Wilmington to get the perfect shot. Other portions of UNCW also made their way into The Conjuring 2013, such as Lumina Theater in downtown Wilmington.
