At the start of Series 3, Poole is murdered, and clumsy London detective Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) arrives to investigate the death of his deadpan predecessor. He then stays on the island permanently as the new detective, after his wife informs him she is leaving him.

- All the equipment used to make the show once got stuck at sea on the way to Guadeloupe. In the early years of Death in Paradise, there was very little filming infrastructure on the island, so everything had to be shipped out there for the production to use – including an electrical generator.
- The shack on the beach now has to be protected from partygoers. The DI's rustic home on the beach gets put up and taken down for each season, and packed away into storage until Death in Paradise returns.
