Runcorn was becoming an industrialised and highly polluted town. During the later 19th century the town became increasingly dominated by the chemical and tanning industries. In the 1880s a pipeline was opened between Northwich and Weston Point, supplying brine to the salt works and in 1896 the Castner Kellner chemical works was established. [25]
Throughout the 19th century Runcorn became increasingly industrialised. The townscape in 1840 was dominated by giant chimneys (the largest being about 100 metres high) of the two soap and alkali works (Hazlehursts and Johnson) which were of national importance.

Runcorn, also a township in Runcorn ancient parish, Bucklow hundred (SJ 5381), became a civil parish in 1866. Since 1974 it has been an unparished area. It includes the hamlets of Higher Runcorn, Runcorn Heath, Stenhills and Westfield.
In 1964 Runcorn was re-invented as a New Town which doubled the town’s population. Visitors to Runcorn may enjoy walking in the Runcorn Hill heathland and nature reserve area. There is also another nature reserve close by that is known as Wigg Island.
