Neerpelt (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈneːrpɛlt] ⓘ; "Lower Pelt") is a town in Pelt and a former municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. In 2018, the municipality had a total population of 17,174. The total area is 42.78 km 2. [2] Effective 1 January 2019, Neerpelt and Overpelt were merged into the new municipality of Pelt.
Overpelt and Neerpelt will cease existence on 31 December 2018, and one day later, on 1 January 2019, Pelt is officially a new municipality in Limburg. The merged municipality will have an area of 83.63 km² and count more than 32.500 inhabitants.
From 1815, Overpelt became a municipality in the province of Limburg of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands; after the division of Limburg (1839) it became a municipality in Belgian Limburg. Apart from the working-class district in Overpelt-Fabriek, the municipality retained a distinctly rural character until the 1950s-60s.

In January 2019, two Belgian municipalities, Neerpelt and Overpelt, decided to join forces and stories to give life to Pelt, a new municipality in the province of Limburg. This choice was confirmed by a local referendum where Pelt won with over 74% of the votes among the three proposed options.
