Garry Kimovich Kasparov [a] (born Garik Kimovich Weinstein [b] on 13 April 1963) is a Russian chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion (1985–2000), political activist and writer. His peak FIDE chess rating of 2851, [ 2 ] achieved in 1999, was the highest recorded until being surpassed by Magnus Carlsen in 2013.
Garry Kasparov, Soviet-born chess master who became the world chess champion in 1985. He is best known for being the youngest world chess champion (at 22 years of age) and the first world chess champion to be defeated by a supercomputer in a competitive chess match.

The 13th World Champion, Garry Kasparov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, and by the age of seven was recognized as a chess prodigy. While still very young, he won both top-level junior and adult events, including two first-place ties at the USSR Championship as a teenager in the early 1980s.
