History. A Fred Meyer store of the 1990s. 1920s–1950s: beginnings. In 1922, the first Fred Meyer store opened in Portland at the corner of SW 5th Ave & Yamhill Dr. The store combined separate shops under one roof such as meat, produce, cheese, and other merchandise.
Opened in 1928, this was one of the very first self-service drugstores in the world. The idea was so novel that wholesalers refused to sell merchandise to Fred Meyer. In order to stock his store, he bought up smaller drugstores and used their inventory.
Fred G. Meyer (originally Frederick Grubmeyer) came to Portland, Oregon in 1908 when he was 22 years old. Drawing on his experience working for his family’s grocery business, Mr. Meyer began selling coffee from a horse-drawn cart to workers at farms and lumber camps.
Meyer opened four new stores between 1929 and 1932: a toiletry store, a department store in the outlying Portland neighborhood of Hollywood, and his first stores outside Portland, in the towns of Salem and Astoria, Oregon.
With a name change to Fred G. Meyer, he opens the first "all package" grocery store, eventually combining supermart with drugstore, fine jewelers, home decor, home improvement, garden center, sporting goods, electronics, toys and clothing.
When he was two years old, his family immigrated to Brooklyn, where his father, Conrad Grubmeyer, ran a grocery store. When he was almost eighteen years old, Fred set out on his own. He tried mining gold in Alaska in 1905, but went broke and moved to Seattle.
