    1. Prepare in advance

This is a common interview question, so it's ideal to prepare an answer ahead of time. Preparing allows you to develop a straightforward answer that communicates all the elements of the project that you want the employer to know. Having a prepared answer equips you to confidently explain the project, discuss your skills and describe how you overcame the challenge. Consider making a list of all the projects from your professional career. Then, write down a few key moments for those projects. You might pick two or three to develop to ensure you're prepared for the question.Related: How To Prepare for an Interview

    2. Use the STAR interview technique

The STAR interview technique is a method for answering questions that considers many parts of a project or scenario. You might use this method to structure your answer in the interview. Each aspect describes a different element of the project, including: •Situation: Describe the situation, setting or where the project took place. You might name the company you were with or explain the premise for the project assignment. •Task: Next, name the tasks that you completed to organize and manage the project. You might explain the overall goal of the project or describe your specific duties. •Action: Next, explain how you completed your tasks and responsibilities. This is an opportunity to explain how your skills manifest into tangible work and outcomes. •Result: Lastly, describe the end result of the project. It's important to include metrics and other real outcomes to demonstrate the success of the project. Related: How To Use the STAR Interview Response Technique

    3. Be specific and concise

Whether or not you use the STAR method for your answer, it's important to be specific and concise when describing the best project you've ever worked on. Try to provide specific details about your skills or actions while briefly discussing the premise of the project. A concise answer shows the employer that you've thought about your response. Additionally, specificity helps ensure that you mention all the relevant details within your answer.

    Example 1: Wedding planner

"As a wedding planner, I spend a significant portion of my time at work planning and organizing details for a couple's wedding day. I've managed over 50 weddings in my 10 years as a planner, but one in particular was the best project I got to work on. It was a destination wedding in Spain during the summer. This was my first experience coordinating a destination wedding. During the majority of the planning stages, I worked to overcome the language barrier by practicing Spanish and hiring a renowned translator."My responsibilities included arranging travel for the couple's relatives, decorating and setting up the venue and organizing the day-of celebration. I implemented different project management tactics to successfully plan the details of the wedding by completing tasks in stages. Additionally, I led a team of five others to assist with the details of the event. In the end, we collaborated with local vendors to run the event effectively. Every guest arrived on time, and each detail was how the couple had requested. Despite a few challenges, the project was successful, and I expanded my business plan to include destination weddings."

    Example 2: Marketing executive

"When I worked for Clearwater Marketing, I was put in charge of our biggest client. This client asked my team to produce a multilevel marketing campaign to promote their newest product line. The scope of the project intimidated me, but I was able to gather my team and delegate tasks to each member according to their skills. We developed ideas for a robust promotional campaign for print, digital and social media outlets. Each outlet had customized promotional content and action steps for the audience to take. I was responsible for delegating tasks and liaising with the client."I collaborated with my manager and my team to effectively develop, create and produce these promotional materials. After we received enthusiastic client approval, we released the promotion. It was extremely successful. We reached over 130,297 users through social media, and over 400,000 people through the other outlets. The company saw a 57% increase in sales as a result of the campaign. After this project, my manager gave me a raise, and I continued to lead this team to complete over 75 successful campaigns for the remainder of my time at the company."

    Example 3: Human resources associate

"The best project I ever worked on was developing a comprehensive employee training guide for a start-up company. When I began working there, I was the only employee in the HR department, so it was my responsibility to develop curriculum and training programs. My goal was to create a program that reflected the company values of inclusion, diversity, creativity and integrity. Over the course of two years, I gathered materials and conducted employee interviews to build a training guide. By the end of two years, I managed a team of three within the HR department."When we finished the guide, it consisted of six on-boarding trainings and six different quarterly trainings. Each one included important values from the company, and I sourced much of the content from the employees themselves. This is the training they still implement today, and the turnover rate at the company is only 2%. I used my organization, critical thinking and management skills to successfully develop, write and then implement this project from start to finish." Share: Twitter LinkedIn Facebook Email
